Waist Circumference Risk Calculator

Waist circumference alone flags abdominal-fat risk: for men, risk rises above 94 cm and is high above 102 cm; for women the lines are 80 cm and 88 cm. An 85 cm waist on a man sits in the low-risk zone — with margin, but not unlimited margin.

How it works

If you could keep only one body measurement, a strong case exists for the humble waist circumference. It needs a tape, ten seconds and no arithmetic, yet it captures the thing that matters most about body fat — where it sits. Fat stored around the abdomen wraps the liver and other organs in metabolically active tissue that raises the risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and fatty liver far more than the same fat on the hips and thighs.

The thresholds used here are the World Health Organization's: for men, risk is increased above 94 cm and high above 102 cm; for women, 80 cm and 88 cm. They come from studies linking waist size to the point where risk factors begin clustering, and they are deliberately set as action levels — the first line is a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis of anything.

Two honest caveats. First, the cut-offs were derived mostly from European populations; guidance for South Asian, Chinese and Japanese adults uses lower action points, around 90 cm for men. Second, where you measure matters: this page assumes the navel level used by most home measurement guidance. Whichever landmark you choose, use the same one every time — the trend is the information.

The method

WHO waist circumference action levels: men ≤94 cm low risk, 94–102 increased, >102 high; women ≤80 low, 80–88 increased, >88 high. Waist-to-hip ratio risk lines: 0.90 (men), 0.85 (women). Waist measured horizontally at the navel, relaxed, end of a normal exhale.

Educational only — not medical advice. This calculator gives general information worked out from the figures you enter and the published formulas described on this page. It is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a substitute for professional medical care. Bodies vary, formulas are population averages, and your own circumstances matter — for decisions about your health, talk to your doctor or another qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly should the tape go?

Around the abdomen at the level of your navel, horizontal, snug but not compressing the skin, at the end of a normal breath out, standing. Measure twice and average if the readings differ.

My BMI is fine but my waist is over the line. Which wins?

Take the waist seriously. A healthy BMI with a large waist — sometimes called normal-weight obesity — carries measurably higher risk than the BMI suggests, because the risk follows the abdominal fat.

How fast can waist size change?

Visibly within weeks of sustained change: the waist responds to fat loss before the scale sometimes does, because abdominal stores are among the first mobilised. Monthly measurements, same conditions, tell the story.
