Ovulation Calculator — Your Ovulation Day

Ovulation is timed from the end of the cycle, not the start: it happens about 14 days before your next period. On a 28-day cycle that lands on day 14 — but on a 32-day cycle it is day 18, not day 14. Enter your cycle length and this page counts it properly.

How it works

The most persistent myth in fertility is that ovulation happens on day 14. It does — in a textbook 28-day cycle. The biology actually works the other way: the phase after ovulation (the luteal phase) is the fairly constant part, about 14 days, while the phase before it stretches and shrinks with cycle length. So ovulation is found by counting backwards from the next period, and in a 35-day cycle it falls near day 21.

Knowing the day matters because the egg survives only 12–24 hours after release, while sperm survive up to five days in fertile cervical fluid. That asymmetry creates the fertile window — the five days before ovulation plus the day itself — which the fertile window calculator on this page maps out in full. Conception is most likely from intercourse in the two days before ovulation.

Treat calendar output as a hypothesis. Cycles vary month to month even in regular women, and an estimate built on averages can miss the real day by several days in any given month. LH test strips detect the hormone surge 24–36 hours before ovulation, and a sustained basal temperature rise confirms it happened — the calendar tells you when to start testing, the tests tell you the truth.

The method

Ovulation day = LMP + cycle length − 14 days (fixed ~14-day luteal phase). Fertile window = ovulation − 5 days through ovulation + 1 day. Estimates assume a regular cycle at the entered length.

Educational only — not medical advice. This calculator gives general information worked out from the figures you enter and the published formulas described on this page. It is not a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or a substitute for professional medical care. Bodies vary, formulas are population averages, and your own circumstances matter — for decisions about your health, talk to your doctor or another qualified professional.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ovulate on a different day than this says?

Yes — this is an average-based estimate. Even women with regular cycles ovulate on varying days month to month; a few days either side of the estimate is normal.

What are the signs of ovulation?

Cervical mucus turning clear, slippery and stretchy (like egg white) is the classic sign; some people notice one-sided pelvic twinges (mittelschmerz) or a small rise in basal temperature afterwards, which confirms it retrospectively.

How soon after ovulation can I test for pregnancy?

Implantation typically occurs 6–12 days after ovulation, and tests turn positive a day or two after that. Testing from the day of the missed period gives the most reliable result.
